"I'm so happy Ronnie from 'Jersey Shore' was unavailable and this exciting opportunity was able to come my way," Ansari said in a statement.
Ansari's cameo at the 2009 show was just one LOL-inducing moment in a burgeoning career packed with them, from his co-starring spot on NBC's "Parks & Recreation" to his Comedy Central stand-up special, "Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening," to his appearance in "Funny People" as bombastic comedian Raaaaaaaandy, who might just say of the 2010 Movie Awards, "Get ready to laugh your d--- off!"
"Our audience fell in love with Aziz on 'Human Giant.' They followed him to the movies, TV and stand-up, and connect with him daily online," said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV. "Aziz is the perfect host for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, as he will bring his innovative comedy and distinctive style to the movie industry's most rebellious night on television."
The 19th annual Movie Awards will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Initial voting to pick the nominees has just concluded atMovieAwards.MTV.com, where fans selected their favorite films in categories like Best Kiss, Best Villain and Best WTF Moment. After the nominees are announced, voting for a winner in each category will kick off on May 11 and run through June 5. But voting for Best Movie will stay open throughout the awards show itself — meaning you'll have a chance to affect the night's biggest prize until the very last minute.
